Choose a regular time on each of the four Sundays of Advent. Put a paper wreath on the table and add one paper flame at each gathering. Children can lead a round before the family reads a short passage together.

First Sunday of Advent date reference

Four Sundays around the table

First Sunday: Read Isaiah 9:2 and play a listening game. Each person names one sound they hear while waiting quietly. Second Sunday: Read Luke 1:26–38 and pass a folded paper message around the table. The last reader shares Mary’s news. Third Sunday: Read Luke 2:8–14 and let each person draw something that brings joy. Guess what the pictures show. Fourth Sunday: Read Luke 2:15–20 and arrange three drawings in story order: the field, the journey and the manger.

Make a family calendar

Mark the four Sundays on a calendar and let a different person choose the music or tell the story each week. If your family misses a Sunday, join the next gathering where you are. Save the four drawings with the calendar and ask which moment everyone remembers at Christmas.
