Pick a side before you twist. Will the filling stick to the wafer in your left hand, your right hand, or a little of both? I wouldn’t stake dessert on my prediction, but I would happily keep score.
National Oreo Cookie Day falls on March 6.

Agree on the rules before the crumbs fly
Set out ten sandwich cookies for the whole group, two labeled spots for left and right, and a pencil. Check ingredients with your tasters. Give each cookie to one person to handle and eat. If you only have four cookies, run four trials and leave the other spaces empty. A trial means one twist, whoever does it.
Count what happened
Ask everyone for a prediction. Hold a cookie with one wafer in each hand and twist gently. Agree that any visible filling on both sides counts as split. Color one box in the matching graph row and pass the pencil. The last cookie is a good chance to let the youngest scientist call the result.
Open the imaginary flavor lab
Compare the tallest row with the predictions. Ten cookies tell you about this batch; another group could easily get a different result. Now invent a flavor inspired by the experiment. Draw a cross-section, name the filling and pitch it in one sentence. I’d give a very serious hearing to a cookie called Crumb Avalanche.
